Translating French images into English

French turns up in images more often than people expect — restaurant menus, French and Canadian product packaging, official forms, museum placards, bilingual signage where only the French side is legible in your photo. It looks close enough to English to seem easy, which is exactly how mistakes get through.

PicTranslate reads the French off the image and redraws the English in its place, keeping the accents, the layout and the line breaks intact so a menu still reads like a menu.

What French → English translation has to get right

  • ▸False friends: the words that look identical are the ones that trip people up — actuellement is currently, not actually; éventuellement is possibly, not eventually. Context decides, and getting it wrong reads as fluent nonsense.
  • ▸Accents and ligatures: é, è, ê, ç and the joined œ change the word. Dropping them during OCR silently produces a different one, so they are read as written.
  • ▸Text contraction: French runs roughly 15–20% longer than English, so the translation is shorter than the space it came from. Labels are re-centred rather than left hanging at one edge.
  • ▸Register: French distinguishes formal vous from informal tu, and signage, legal notices and marketing copy each sit at a different level. The English keeps the tone rather than flattening it.
  • ▸Regional vocabulary: Quebec French names some everyday things differently from France. Both are recognised without switching modes.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is French to English image translation?+

PicTranslate runs on top-tier LLMs (GPT-4o, Claude 3.5) combined with French OCR and English context modelling, producing industry-leading accuracy — even on complex layouts and domain-specific terminology.

Does the translated image keep the original layout?+

Yes. The AI detects the French text's position, font and background, then redraws the English translation in place — the output image is nearly identical in layout to the original.

What kinds of images does this work for?+

French e-commerce listings, manga panels, technical documents, mobile screenshots, menus and signs — any image containing French text can be translated into English.

How long does French → English translation take?+

Typically 3-5 seconds per image. Complex layouts or large files may take a little longer. Batch mode processes up to 20 images in parallel.
