Translating Japanese images into Chinese

Most Japanese text people need translated never arrives as text. It is manga pages, game and app interfaces, product packaging, station signage and store shelf tags — pixels, not characters, so there is nothing to select and nothing to paste into a translator.

Japanese mixes kanji, hiragana and katakana in one line, runs either horizontally or vertically, and adds furigana reading aids above or beside the characters. PicTranslate reads it straight off the image, translates it into Chinese, and redraws the result in place, so the layout you were looking at is the layout you get back.

What Japanese → Chinese translation has to get right

  • ▸Three scripts interleaved: a single sentence switches between kanji, hiragana and katakana with no separator, and word boundaries have to be inferred.
  • ▸Furigana: the small ruby text above a kanji is a pronunciation guide, not content, and OCR that reads it as a second line produces nonsense.
  • ▸Vertical columns read right to left, so the reading order is the opposite of the visual scan order a Latin-trained model assumes.
  • ▸Chinese has no spaces to break a line at, so a long translated string needs a wrap point chosen for it rather than found automatically.
  • ▸Dense glyphs stop being legible below roughly 12px, which matters when the original label was set in a small Latin face.
  • ▸Length is close between Japanese and Chinese, so the layout survives mostly intact — the work is in matching weight and alignment rather than re-fitting the text.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is Japanese to Chinese image translation?+

PicTranslate runs on top-tier LLMs (GPT-4o, Claude 3.5) combined with Japanese OCR and Chinese context modelling, producing industry-leading accuracy — even on complex layouts and domain-specific terminology.

Does the translated image keep the original layout?+

Yes. The AI detects the Japanese text's position, font and background, then redraws the Chinese translation in place — the output image is nearly identical in layout to the original.

What kinds of images does this work for?+

Japanese e-commerce listings, manga panels, technical documents, mobile screenshots, menus and signs — any image containing Japanese text can be translated into Chinese.

How long does Japanese → Chinese translation take?+

Typically 3-5 seconds per image. Complex layouts or large files may take a little longer. Batch mode processes up to 20 images in parallel.
